『2012 UTRIP Lectures』(東京大学、平成24年度)
Lecturer: Masahito Ueda Title: Introduction to ultra cold atomic gases

Q1 Have you learned anything related to the topics before attending the lecture today?
・I have a background in condensed matter physics (Statistical mechanics + quantum).
・Yes, I have taken courses on Basic Physics and Solid State Physics. I have learnt most of the Concepts that was discussed today.
・Yes. In “Intro to Modern Physics”, “Thermodynamics”, ”University Chemistry”, “Atomic Physics Laboratory”, “Astrophysics”, “General Astronomy”, “Quantum Mechanics”.
・I have learned about magnetic cooling and magnetic trap methods but not about quantised structures and optical lattices.
・I went through the topics like Laser cooling, atomic interference (young’s double slit expt), and also gone through dual nature of atoms.
・I had a little introduction to these topics in my first year at college. No detailed knowledge.
・No.
・I have taken the core physics curriculum consisting of mechanics and electricity and magnetism, but did not dive too much into the specifies that this lecture focused on.
・Yes - know some physics and wave mechanics.
・BEC, evaporate cooling, laser cooling, quantum mechanics.
・No.
・In some related courses like Quantum Chemistry, Modern Physics etc.

Q2 Do you think the level of lecture was appropriate to you? In case you had difficulty understanding the lecture, please specify the reason.
・The lecture was well targeted and brilliantly organized! There was no difficulty at all.
・Yes, the level of lecture was appropriate for me.
・Yes. Though I have a physics background, I feel that the lecture was appropriate to anyone with a basic level of modern chemistry on physics knowledge.
・Yes, the level was very appropriate, it will be ok to go into more advanced details for physics students. It was well presented, explained and easy to understand.
・Yes, it was very learning and the professor was quite expressive and informative in his way of teaching.
・Yes, it was totally appropriate to me.
・The level of lecture was easy to understand even though I don’t have much knowledge about the topic.
・I felt that the lecture was at the perfect level for an introductory lecture. I feel that I learned a lot of new concepts without much confusion. There was a lot of good background information and the professor did a great job of explaining some complex concept.
・Very appropriate. Material was advanced but professor made it easy to understand.
・The first half of the presentation is a bit too easy to physicist, since BEC, laser and evaporate cooling is already taught by most undergraduate school. But the latter of the presentation is excellent, and in a appropriate level to graduate.
・I had difficulty with some concepts being a biology student.
・Level was appropriate.

Q3 Please explain how interesting the lecture was.
・The lecture was one of the best colloquial talks on condensed matter physics I have seen. Well done !
・The topic was really fascinating and the Professor made it even more exciting.
・Exciting explanation of some IMPORTANT modern experiments. Very good interactive style of lecturing. Ueda-sensei does a good job of relating experiments to their fundamental importance without overwhelming students.
・It was very interesting and well presented. The lecturer made it interesting, answered questions, used the black-board and had excellent slides. The material presented was excellent.
・The topics like, Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC), Doppler Cooling made the lecture quite interesting. Moreover, Uncertainty relation of BEC, equipartition law, Interference b/w of independent BECs is good.
・I enjoyed the lecture a lot, very much interesting.
・It was pretty interesting to learn about recent advances in physics like BEC and the possibilities it offers towards further research.
・The lecture was very interesting. The professor was very enthusiastic about his work and really did a great job keeping us engaged. I enjoyed hearing about new fields of research in physics and professor seemed to talk about a lot of new and interesting concepts.
・Very interesting, extremely interested.
・The latter part about applications of BEC and lattice vortex are excellent. It is very interesting to learn quantum effects in macroscopic scale. The content of this presentation is indeed very fascinating !
・It was interesting but I don’t think I can take anything from the lecture with no back ground knowledge.
・Very interesting. I was able to connect a lot of terms and concepts together. I am fascinated by Quantum Physics. After this lecture, I plan to take a few more quantum courses for the next semester.

Q4 Please write your comments or suggestions that you may have about the lecture.
・It was an honor to watch that lecture. An excellent presentation on the power of very simple physical ideas.
・I really liked the interactive nature of the lecture.
・Good job using discussion style à I usually learned best in his manner. Ueda sensei no eigo wa sugoi desuyo.
・Very good lecture, well prepared and thought through. I would not charge anything in it. Best lecture so far.
・Overall, it was a perfect lecture for me.
・The use of examples, the way of explaining and the way of two-way (student-teacher) interaction was simply wonderful. Best lecture for me till date on UTRIP.
・It was a good lecture, easy to understand. Informative and interactive.
・I really enjoyed today’s lecture. The professor came very well prepared and seemed very excited to talk about his work. Maybe it would have been wise to have some hard-copy of the slides, but other than that, I thought the professor lecture went very well.
・Professor was interactive with the class.
・Can explain more details about new BEC probes those effect (etc. casimir effect). Can spend less time on explaining the first few slides. Instead, spend more time on how BEC is used on current research.
・Good interaction with the audience and lecturer was enthusiastic. Lecturer answered questions well.
・It was really a great lecture. Do you take any course that I could attend?
